The use of portfolio assessment in teaching writing to the third grade students of SMPN 2 Inderalaya Utara
The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not there is a significant difference between writing achievement of third grade students who were taught by using portfolio assessment and those who were not and also to find out whether or not portfolio assessment can be an effective way to increase students’ writing achievement. The population of this study was all the third grade students of SMPN 2 Inderalaya Utara in academic year of 2012/2013. The method used was the experimental. Fifty students were chosen as the sample of the study. Those fifty students then were divided into experimental and control group with every group contained twenty five students. The data from from pre-test and post-test of the experimental group and control group were analyzed by using t-test (paired sample and independent sample ttest) and were calculated by SPSS version 18. The data obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed by using percentage formula. The results of the test show that there was a significant difference in students’ writing achievement between the students who were taught by using portfolio assessment and those who were not. The results of the questionnaire show that portfolio assessment can be an effective way to increase students’ writing achievement. Therefore, it can be said that portfolio assessment can be used as the alternative way to teach writing to the students.
