The utilization of renewable energy especially water energy as an alternative to meet energy needs in Indonesia. Micro-scale hydropower plants play an important role in economic development in remote and rural areas. Utilization of water energy on a pico scale requires a small turbine that combines efficiency and economic. Crossflow turbine is the appropriate turbine to be used in pico-scale hydropower system especially in remote and rural areas in Indonesia due to its several advantages, simple construction, good performance in various flow variations, suitability to be placed in low head conditions One of the parameters that affect the performance of a crossflow turbine is the number of blades that consist in the runner. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the number of crossflow turbine blades to mechanical power and efficiency that generated by the turbine. In this study, crossflow turbine was designed using velocity triangle approach and the number of crossflow turbine blades was varied by 16, 18, 22, 24, 26, and 30 blades. Then, 2D simulation was carried out using the ANSYS FLUENT 18.1 to investigate the effect of the number of blades in the runner. According to the simulation result, the optimum number of blades for the crossflow turbine is 26 blades. Based on the simulation result, the runner with 26 blades has the maximum efficiency which is 76%.
