The purpose of this research is to find out the consumptive lifestyle and the meaning of hanging out image for students. The method used is a qualitative research method with data collection techniques namely, observation, interviews and documentation. This study was analyzed using the theory of consumption society put forward by Jean Baudrillard. The results of the study found that hanging out is a current trend that has become a lifestyle for college students. Hanging out is done by students for social media needs, all matters related to appearance must be considered when hanging out, including the style of dress which must also be attractive and trendy so that it can have its own image or sign in cyberspace and in reality. The image or sign in question is a contemporary symbol attached to a student. The meaning of the image of hanging out for students is to relieve stress, expand relationships and friendship networks, as a means for self-existence, and follow current trends. Hanging out activity is a consumptive activity by students, because it is done more than 2 to 3 times a week by several students.
