ANALISIS PENGARUH TRANSFORMASI DIPLOMASI TIONGKOK DARI LOW-PROFILE MENJADI MAJOR COUNTRY TERHADAP DINAMIKA HUBUNGAN TIONGKOK-AMERIKA SERIKAT
Before becoming a great power as it is today, China implemented a passive diplomacy (low profile diplomacy) from 1980s until 2000s by Xi Jinping’s predecessors: Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, and Hu Jintao. China attempted to improve its power by being open to international community and not assertive. Driven by China’s growth and nationalism spirit, since Xi Jinping took office in 2013, China gradually shifted its diplomacy from passive to active, hence major country diplomacy which has two characteristics: wolf warrior diplomacy and win-win cooperation. This research aims to find out the implication of China’s diplomacy transformation from low-profile to major country on the dynamics of China-U.S. relations before the G20 in Indonesia, given the U.S. is China’s main rival. This research uses Pang Zhongying’s low-profile diplomacy and Dai and Luqiu’s major country diplomacy concepts and it is conducted through qualitative method. China’s diplomacy transformation implicated on the sensitivity of China and the U.S. This behavior shift was driven by the ideological difference between both countries and China’s increasing confidence. However, during the G20 in Indonesia, China and the U.S. had decided to pursue the better relations. Keywords: China, diplomacy, the United States, Xi Jinping
