Recently, livestock business has been accused of being a part of polluting the environment. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture in 2021 shows that the livestock sector in South Sumatra, especially the laying hens population, has increased every year. According to the South Sumatra Provincial Office, the population of laying hens in South Sumatra in 2019 was 7,095397, in 2020 it was 8,437642 and in 2021 it increased by 8,631985. One of the negative impacts of livestock business is environmental pollution in the form of odors, one of the factors that cause unpleasant odors is high ammonia gas around livestock businesses. Exposure to ammonia gas in high enough levels can cause irritation to mucous membranes, lungs, coughs and upper respiratory tract infections (ARI), such as runny nose, sore throat, and bronchitis. This study aims to analyze the relationship between ammonia levels. air with the complaint of ARI of laying hens breeding coop workers PT. X Payalingkung Lubuk Keliat Ogan Ilir. This study uses a cross-sectional study design with non-probability techniques where all the population is used as a sample with a total sampling of 56 workers. The analysis technique was univariate, bivariate and multivariate using SPSS in the chi-square test and multiple logistic regression predictive models. The research variables that were not significantly related to the ARI complaints of laying hens breeding cage workers were age, years of service, personal protective equipment (masks) and air ammonia levels. The variable which is significantly related to ARI complaints is smoking behavior. The results of the multivariate analysis showed that smoking behavior was the most dominant variable affecting ARI complaints of cage workers after being controlled by variables of age, years of service, PPE (masks) and air ammonia levels (p – value = 0.030; PR = 10,714; Cl = 1,253 – 91,604). The conclusion of the study was that there was no relationship between ARI complaints on the characteristics and PPE (masks) of cage workers, but there was a relationship between smoking behavior and ARI complaints of cage workers.
