Background: The course of HIV infection in children and adolescents often poses a threat to physical and mental problems. The presence of HIV increases the risk of mental disorders so that the mental health condition of patients is worse than children and adolescents who do not have HIV. Ongoing emotional dependence can lead to problems such as depression and aggressive behavior. Depression is the most common neuropsychiatric complication in children with HIV and can occur during all phases of infection. Parental completeness can affect a child's level of depression. Children whose parents died of HIV/AIDS will have more emotional problems. Methods: This study aims to look at the picture of depression in children with HIV / AIDS and children who do not suffer from HIV / AIDS in South Sumatra Province with a case control research method using the Children Depression Inventory (CDI) questionnaire, samples that meet the inclusion criteria as many as 9 cases of children infected with HIV/AIDS and 52 children who are not infected with HIV/AIDS. In this study the age of the subjects ranged from 5-17 years. Results: The study showed that the group of children with HIV/AIDS was more susceptible to depression (66.7%) than the group of children who didn't suffer from HIV/AIDS, more of whom didn't experience symptoms of depression (75%). The average total CDI score of children infected with HIV/AIDS group was 13.11 (± 5.65) with a median value of 15, while in the children non-HIV/AIDS group the average value was 8.39 (± 6.04) with a median value of 7.5. Conclusion: The highest value of CDI dimensions in this study was the Anhedonia dimension with an average in the group of children with HIV / AIDS of 3.56 (± 2.74) and in the group of children who didn't suffer from HIV / AIDS of 2.90 (± 2.40).
