Composite is known as a new material that is produced from a combination of two or more contituent materials so that they have better physical and chemical properties. The synthesis of the MnO2/Cellulose composite was carried out to determine the adsorption ability of the adsorbent on the malachite green dye through the influence of variations in pH, contact time and temperature and to study the structural stability of the MnO2/Cellulose composite as seen from the adsorption ability of the adsorben during the regeneration process. MnO2/Cellulose was characterized by XRD, FT-IR and BET analysis. The XRD characterization results show that the peak that appears is at 22.8o which is a specific region for cellulose compounds and the diffraction peak for MnO2 material is found at 21.3770o. The results of the FT-IR characterization showed that there were O-H groups in the FTIR spectrum of the MnO2/Cellulose composite at wave number 3348.42 cm-1, C-H groups were shown at wave number 2900.94 cm-1 and Mn-O groups appeared at wave number 1620,21 cm-1. The BET characterization shows that the MnO2/Cellulose composite material has a surface area of 36.393 m/g with a pore volume of 0.174 cc/g and a pore diameter of 15.284 nm. Second order pseudo adsorption kinetics is more suitable to explain the adsorption process malachite green using a composite adsorbent of MnO2/cellulose and cellulose with a linear regression coefficient close to 1. Parameters of malachite green adsorption isotherms for both adsorbents lead to the Freundlich isotherm model and occur spontaneously. The large surface area of the MnO2/Cellulose composite resulted in the adsorption capacity and efficiency of the MnO2/Cellulose composite being greater than that of cellulose so that the decrease in the percentage of adsorption that occurred was not so drastic. Key Word: Composite, MnO2, Cellulose, Adsorption, Malachite Green.
