Biochar is a material that contains a high carbon content, good structural stability, large surface area, and high ion exchange capacity so that it can be utilized in the adsorption process. Biochar is obtained from burning at high temperatures from various organic wastes in limited oxygen conditions which causes an increase in pore volume. However, if the temperature is too high, the pore structure is destroyed and micropores are blocked, so that the increase in pore volume will be hampered and a decrease in surface area will occur. This research was carried out by modifying biochar using manganese oxide compounds into MnO2/Biochar composites to obtain the characteristics of an adsorbent with a higher surface area and pore volume so as to increase adsorption capacity. Biochar and MnO2/Biochar composites were characterized by XRD, FTIR and BET analysis. Variables in this study were variations in pH, contact time, temperature and concentration, with adsorption parameters in the form of kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, and regeneration. The adsorption process was carried out in 20 mL of malachite green solution by adding 0.02 g each of biochar and MnO2/Biochar composite with a predetermined variable, then the adsorbed concentration was measured using a Uv-Vis spectrophotometer. The results of the XRD analysis show that there is a diffraction angle of around 22.36⁰ on pure biochar and a shift of around 24.12⁰ on the MnO2/Biochar composite. FT-IR analysis shows that there are functional groups -OH, C=C, C-O, and Mn-O. BET analysis shows an increase in surface area from 50.936 m2/g to 96.047 m2/g, and is classified as a type IV isotherm. Optimum adsorption occurs at pH 5 for biochar and pH 4 for the MnO2/Biochar composite. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm data show that adsorption tends to follow the pseudo second order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. The highest maximum capacity (Qm) value for biochar adsorbent 62.5 mg/g, while for MnO2/Biochar-composite 79.365 mg/g. Regeneration data for each material shows that the MnO2/Biochar composite material was more stable when used repeatedly than pure biochar.
