The coastal area of Tanjung Carat in Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra Province has undergone environmental changes due to human activities, including the opening of mangrove land, which has resulted in a decrease in the number of mangroves and an increase in water pollution. These changes have affected the abundance of benthic diatoms in the area. This study aims to analyze the composition and abundance of benthic diatoms in the Tanjung Carat coastal area and their relationship with environmental parameters. The study was conducted in December 2022 by selecting 6 observation stations in three distinct locations within the eastern side of the Tanjung Carat area. Samples collected include sediment for benthic diatom analysis, water and sediment samples for nutrient analysis, and measurement of environmental parameters. The methods used include station selection, sample collection, environmental parameter measurement, nutrient analysis, and benthic diatom identification. Data were analyzed using community structure analysis and PCA to correlate benthic diatom abundance with environmental parameters. The results showed that there were 53 genera of benthic diatoms in 19 orders with an abundance ranging from 372 to 6,890 x105 cells/m3. Station 3 showed the highest abundance, while station 2 showed the lowest abundance. Although no significant environmental variables were found to influence benthic diatom abundance, this study still shows a relationship between benthic diatom abundance and environmental parameters through PCA analysis.
