PERBEDAAN BAHAN IRIGASI EKSTRAK KULIT MANGGIS DENGAN KOMBINASI NaOCl 2,5% DAN EDTA 17% TERHADAP KEBERSIHAN SMEAR LAYER
Background: Root canal preparation produced smear layer. Irrigant solution used to eliminate debris, microorganism, organic and inorganic components of the smear layer. Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) peel extract is natural irrigation solution that has active compounds to eliminate smear layer from root canal. Objective: To determine the difference between mangosteen peel extract irrigation with a combination of NaOCl 2,5% and EDTA 17% on the cleanliness of the smear layer. Methods: This quasi-experiment used 30 mandibular premolars and was divided into 2 groups. Samples were prepared with the crown down technique and irrigated according to the groups: group A mangosteen peel extract 40%, group B combination NaOCl 2,5% and EDTA 17%. Samples were cut in bucco-lingual direction, then was observed using measuring microscope with 1000x magnification. The level of root canal cleanliness of smear layer was measured using the Torabinejad scale. The data were analyzed by the Kappa test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and Mann-Whitney test. Result: There was no significant difference between mangosteen peel extract 40% and combination NaOCl 2,5% with EDTA 17%. Conclusion: Irrigation of mangosteen peel extract 40% has the same effectiveness as the combination NaOCl 2,5% and EDTA 17% to clean smear layer of root canal.
