Background: Periodontal disease is the second most frequent dental and oral health problem In Indonesia. Porphyromonas gingivalis, prevalent in subgingival plaques, is the primary bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can be prevented mechanically, chemically, or spontaneously by inhibiting plaque growth. Natural ingredients such as corn hair, which include antibacterial properties such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, and tannins, can be utilized as a chemical preventive alternative. Purpose: This study aimed to find out the antibacterial potency of corn hair extract (Zea mays saccharata Sturt) on the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis. Materials and methods: The material used in this study was corn hair. This study was an experimental laboratory study in vitro. The treatment group used corn hair extract with concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75% obtained through maceration methods. The positive control used 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate, and the negative control was used aquades. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) test were conducted using dilution methods and inhibition test using disc diffusion methods. Results: The results of the MIC test in this study could not be determined because the dark color of the extract blocked it, and the results of the MBC test were set at a concentration of 50%. The results of the inhibition zone test showed corn hair extract concentration of 75% had the largest inhibition zone diameter than other concentrations, which was 24 mm but still lower compared to 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate. Conclusion: Corn hair extract (Zea mays saccharata Sturt) has antibacterial potency against the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis.
