THE EFFECT OF PASTEURIZED HOLSTEIN AND JERSEY COW’S MILK FOR EMAIL HARDNESS Rida Agustia Ningsih Dentistry Program Medical Faculty of Sriwijaya University ABSTRACT Background: Email was the hardest part of teeth. Email composed of minerals that can be released from the tooth surface when the pH of the oral cavity was below 5,5. The decrease in pH could lead to a demineralization process. Alternative materials that could be used to reduce demineralization and increase the remineralization process were pasteurized Holstein and Jersey cow's milk. Objective: This study aimed to determine the difference in the effect of pasteurized Holstein and Jersey cow’s milk for email hardness. Methods: 30 crowns of upper and lower premolars were divided into 3 groups consisted of 10 crowns. The email hardness value was measured using the Vickers Hardness Tester at the time of pretest, posttest 1 and posttest 2. The statistical tests used were Repeated Measures Anova and One Way Anova. Results: The results of the Repeated Measures Anova test showed that each group had significantly different email hardness. The results of the One way Anova test on pretest and posttest 1 before given treatment and after given the demineralized material showed no significant difference, while posttest 2 after giving remineralization material there was a significant difference. The advanced test, Pos Hoc Bonferroni posttest 2, showed a significant difference on email hardness values between the control group with pasteurized Holstein cow's milk, and the control group with pasteurized Jersey cow's milk. The groups that were not significantly different were the pasteurized Holstein and Jersey cow’s milk groups. Conclusion: There was an impact of pasteurized Holstein and Jersey cow’s milk on email hardness. The results of statistical test show there was no significant difference between pasteurized Holstein and Jersey cow’s milk on email hardness. Keywords: demineralization, email, email hardness, Holstein cow pasteurized milk, Jersey cow pasteurized milk, remineralization
