PENGARUH THALASSEMIA BETA TERHADAP BESAR SUDUT GONIAL PADA RADIOGRAF SEFALOMETRI (SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW)
Background: Thalassemia is a genetic disorder characterized by the absent or decreased production of α and β-globin chains. Beta-thalassemia patients usually have growth retardation, especially of the condyles and the ramus of the mandible, which can cause malocclusion. Malocclusion in beta-thalassemia patients can be treated with orthodontic treatment by considering cephalometric analysis, which one of them is gonial angle. Objective: The aim of this systematic literature review was to determine the effect of beta-thalassemia on gonial angle in cephalometric radiographs. Methods: Articles were selected using PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases within period from January 2007 to December 2021. Articles that fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria were assessed using Critical Appraisal Skills Program bias assessment and summarized to acquire demographic data and gonial angle. Results: Ten eligible articles were included in this systematic literature review that consisting of 9 case-control studies and 1 case-report study which bias assessment results were low in 4 articles, moderate in 5 articles, and high in 1 article. All articles in this systematic literature review stated that beta-thalassemia patients have large gonial angle shown in cephalometric radiographs. Conclusion: Beta-thalassemia has an effect on gonial angle that shown in cephalometric radiographs, which produces Class II skeletal pattern, thus dentists need to consider that fact in determining the orthodontic treatment plans
