The learning process is a tangible form of educational implementation. In fact, in the implementation of the learning process, it is not uncommon to encounter learning difficulties that can affect learning outcomes. The learning component that greatly influences the success of the learning process is the learning method. One of the learning methods that demands student activity is role-play. Role-play is an active learning method that emphasizes the ability of students to act out the status and functions of other parties in real life. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the role-play method on student learning outcomes in life chemistry learning at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. This type of research is quasi-experimental. The sample in this study was students of the Medical Education Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya class of 2022 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sampling is done by simple random sampling. In this study, the difference between the pretest and posttest mean in the control group was 34.242 while the difference between the pretest and posttest mean in the experimental group was 46.969. In the analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test, a p value = 0.004 (p-value < 0.05) was obtained, which means that there was a significant difference in the mean difference between the control group and the experiment group with the experimental group having a higher average difference than the control group. Furthermore, after conducting an ANCOVA statistical test to determine the influence of covariate (pretest) on the posttest value of the control group and experiments, it was found that the posttest value in the experimental group increased without the influence of the pretest results. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that role-play learning method is more effective in improving student learning outcomes than conventional learning method. Keywords: Learning method, role-play, learning outcomes, chemistry of life.
