Estuaries are coastal areas, which are close to sea and land areas. Economically, the estuary area is used for fishery activities such as aquaculture and fishing, ecologically the estuary area is a biotic chain, as an energy cycle, as a shelter and foraging for food, as a place of reproduction, as a source of organic matter. Activities carried out by the community will affect the balance of the ecosystem in the waters which causes the structure of the macrozoobenthos community in it to be disturbed, especially those living on the bottom of the substrate. This study aims to determine the structure of the macrozoobenthos community as a bioindicator of water quality in the Payung Island Estuary, Sungsang I Village, Banyuasin II District, Banyuasin Regency. This research was conducted from November 2021 to May 2022, in Waters Pulau Payung, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra and at the Biosystematics Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University. The research method begins with determining the sampling station using the Purposive Systematic Sampling method, in order to obtain 3 station points that represent the location based on environmental baseline. Sampling using line sampling method. Data analysis used the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index formula. The macrozoobenthos community structure found in Pulau Payung Waters consists of 4 classes, namely Bivalvia, Polychaeta, Crustacea and Gastropods, with density values ranging from 133-444ind/. The diversity index (H') of macrozoobenthos ranged from 0.636 to 1.557 which was categorized as low to moderate diversity. Water quality in Payung Island Waters area based on physico-chemical and biological indicators is included in the criteria of waters being quite good for macrozoobenthos life referring to standard parameters based on Minister of Environment Decree No. 51 of 2004 concerning Seawater Quality Standards.
