The use of antioxidants in ethanol extract of butterfly pea flower for facial skin use is formulated in the form of topical cosmetic preparations such as peel off masks because they can accelerate the effect and prolong the contact of antioxidant compounds when applied. The purpose of this study was to determine variations in the concentration of HPMC as a gelling agent and glycerin as a humectant in order to determine the characteristics of the optimum formula for a peel off mask optimized by factorial design. The ethanol extract of butterfly pea flower was characterized and screened for phytochemicals. The peel off mask preparation was designed using 4 formulas obtained from the factorial design so that the response of the viscosity test, dispersion, and drying time was determined and an analysis was carried out to obtain the optimum formula. The optimum formula of peel off mask obtained was tested for stability and antioxidant activity with DPPH. The results of the phytochemical characterization and screening of the extract showed the value of water content (6.35 ± 0.96%), drying shrink (7.61 ± 0.631%), water soluble extract content (14.33 ± 0.58%) and soluble extract content ethanol (12.67 ± 4.16%) and contains phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids. The total phenolic content in the ethanol extract of butterfly pea flower was 86.04 ± 0.30 mgGAE/g extract. The optimum formula for the peel off mask preparation was obtained at a concentration of 2% HPMC and 6% glycerin at F4. The results of stability testing of the optimum formula showed no organoleptic changes in the 1st to 6th cycles as well as changes in viscosity and pH. The results of the antioxidant activity test with DPPH showed that the optimum formula had an IC50 of 173.79 ppm which had weak antioxidant activity. Based on the response analysis using a factorial design, it can be concluded that variations in HPMC and glycerin have a significant effect on determining the optimum formula produced.
