PERSEPSI MASYARAKAT TERHADAP KEBERADAAN HORSESHOE CRAB SEBAGAI HEWAN YANG DILINDUNGI DI PESISIR BANYUASIN, SUMATERA SELATAN
The horseshoe crab is currently classified as a protected animal in Indonesia. The Banyuasin coast is one of the locations for the distribution of horseshoe crabs in Indonesia. Knowledge about the ecology and population status of horseshoe crabs in Indonesia is still very minimal. A questionnaire-based survey was distributed to 122 respondents to determine public perceptions of the distribution and types of horseshoe crabs in the Banyuasin Coast and to determine the main threat factors for the existence of horseshoe crabs. The research was carried out from July to August 2021, analyzed using a qualitative description method with Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS software. The identification results from public perception indicate that the Sembilang National Park area is the location for the distribution of horseshoe crabs (88.9%) consisting of small horseshoe crabs without tails (28%), juveniles with tails (26.4%) and crabs adult horse (44.9%). From November (17.92%) to December (20.21%) horseshoe crabs were most often found. The public knows that there are 2 types of horseshoe crabs, namely Carcionskorpius rotundicauda and Tachypleus sp. In Banyuasin Beach, people still often consume horseshoe crab eggs and meat (42.3%) even though 57% of respondents are aware that there has been a decline in the horseshoe crab population in nature. The main threat that causes horseshoe crabs to decrease is being caught in nets by fishermen by accident (60%). Therefore, a good and effective management strategy is needed in the conservation of horseshoe crabs.
