Acne is the eighth most common disease worldwide with a global prevalence for all ages of around 9.4%. A large number of antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents are available in the global market as topical or systemic treatment modalities, but none of these regimens is free from side effects. Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus L.) essential oil producer Citronella oil is one of the herbal medicinal plants that has the potential as an anti-acne. Citronellal, geraniol, and citronellol have antiacne or antibacterial activity. Essential oils in topical use have a relatively low shelf life and absorption on the skin and are thermodynamically unstable and can produce separate phases during storage. To overcome this problem, in this study, a relatively more effective drug delivery system was developed, namely nanoemulsion. This study aims to obtain the optimum conditions of the anti-acne nanoemulsion formula of citronella (Cymbopogon nardus L.) essential oil. Citronella essential oil was obtained from the Payakabung village integrity service program. Citronella essential oil was formulated into a nanoemulsion dosage form using variations of pine oil, Tween 80 and PEG 400. These three ingredients were optimized using the Design Expert 12 program with the Central Composite Design approach and obtained 15 run formulas. The preparations were evaluated for physical properties, namely organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, percent transmittance, viscosity, specific gravity, hedonic and stability. The evaluation results were analyzed with DX12 to obtain the optimum nanoemulsion formula. The optimum concentration of pine oil is 1%, Tween 80 is 20% and PEG 400 is 10%, has a transmittance percentage of 95%, a viscosity of 1.12 cP, a specific gravity of 1.0283 g/mL and a percent preference for aroma (odor). ) by 73%.
