APLIKASI TINTA KARBON BINCHOTAN DENGAN SnO2 UNTUK LAPIS KATALIS DALAM MEMBRANE ELECTRODE ASSEMBLY (MEA) PADA DIRECT METHANOL FUEL CELL (DMFC)
The research about the application of carbon dots from binchotan and SnO2 ink as catalyst layer in Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) of Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) has been done. Carbon dots was prepared by electrolysis and sonication then ball milled with 40% and 60% SnO2 against carbon dots formed SnO2/C catalyst. Gas diffusion layer (GDL) were made with varied conductive components which were carbon vulcan and carbon dots by spraying method. SnO2/C catalyst, nafion and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), were stirred to produce catalyst ink which then sprayed into the GDL surface forming catalyst layer (CL) in MEA. The hydrophobicity of GDL surface was tested using critical angle analysis. The electrical conductivity and electrochemical surface area (ECSA) values of electrode were calculated based on the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) measurement datas. The hydrophobicity test showed the contact angles were 123,38° for GDL of vulcan and 95,3° for GDL of carbon dots, respectively meaning that GDL of carbon dots is less hydrophobic than GDL of vulcan. The highest electrical conductivity and ESCA values were obtained by the electrode with 60% SnO2 in the catalyst layer with GDL vulcan whose values were 0,401148 S/cm and 288,2992 cm2/g.The performance test of MEA to DMFC acquired 233,7 mV in 15% of methanol concentration as the best result which was achieved by MEA with GDL vulcan SnO2 60%.
