Introduction. Heart Failure is the end stage of all heart diseases and is the cause of increased morbidity and morlality of heart diseases ’ patients. Its prevalence and incidence keeps increasing by years, therefore preventive and promotive action is required to prevent heart failure in patients which have the disease with high risk of causing heart failure, such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart-valve disease, and cardiomyopathy. The purpose of this study is to know the prevalence, etiological pattern, distribution of age and sex of the chronic heart failure patients which are admitted in Mohcmmad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. Method. A descriptive study with retrospective survey desgin. The population is congestive hart failure patients which are admitted at Instalasi Non-Bedah RSUP MohHoesin Palembang in January 2010-June 2011. The sample is 165people. Data is taken from medical record of the patients and is presentated by table, graph, and narration. Result There are 165 patients of chronic heart failure in Instalasi Non-Bedah RSMH Palembang and the prevalence of is 1, 3%. The most frequent range of age of chronic heart failure patients is 50-59 years (32.1%). The most frequent range of age of chronic heart failure male patients is 50-59 years (45%), whereas the most frequent range of age of chronic heart failure female patients are 40-49 years (18,3%) and 50-59 years (18,3%). 83 (50,3%) of chronic heart failure patients is male. The most frequent etiology of chronic heart failure is hypertensive heart disease (32,1%). Discussion. Based on sex, the proportion of chronic heart failure patients between male and female is almost the same. In male patients, as the age increases, the prevalence of chronic heart failure also increases until the age of 60 years old, later on the number decreases. Whereas in female patients, the number of the patients among the age groups is almost equally distributed Based on etiological pattern, the hypertensive heart disease is the main cause of chronic heart failure, both in male and female patient and in age group than 50 years old.
