ackground. Rheumatic Heart Diseases (RHD) is a heart disease caused by unfinished symptoms (seguele) from Rheumatic Fever (RF), which is marked by the occurence of heart valve defects. The incidence and prevalence of RF and RHD in developing countries is still high, ranging between 7,9 t o 12,6 per 1000 school children. Objective. The Research was aimed to know the prevalence of RHD in Pediatric Department of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang in 1 January-31 December 2010 period and the distribution of patients by sex, age, and involvemenl of heart valves, and io know which valve is the most jreguently involved in RHD. Method. An observational descriptive with cross-sectional study design was conducted in RHD patients who were admitted in Pediatric Department of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang based on medical record. Echocardiography examination r e suit s are used t o determine the type of valve abnormalities. ResulL There were 37 patients with RHD in 168 populations. The prevalence of RHD was 22,02%. The propor t ion of giri patients by 19 was 51,35% and boy patients by 18 was 48,65%. Most cases occur in the age group 6-10 years with a jrequency of 18 patients. There were 21 (56,8%) cases involving two heart valves. Mitrai valve was involved in 35 (94,59%) cases, trikuspid valve was involved in 28 (75,68%) cases, aortic valve was involved in 12 (32,43%) cases, and pulmonary valve was involved in 7 (18,92%) cases. Conclucion. The prevalence of RHD was 22,02%. Giri patients were more often affected than boy patients. The highest proportion found in the age group was 6- 10 years. Two heart valves involvemenl are the most common in RHD. Mitrai valve is the most commonly affected in RHD.
