MODIFIKASI BENTONIT ALAM DAN APLIKASINYA SEBAGAI COAGULATION AGENT PENGOLAHAN LIMBAH PALM OIL MILL EFFLUENT (POME)
Modification of natural bentonite by exchanging Ca2+ cations to NH4+ has been studied. The modified material then used as a coagulation agent in way to reduce POME waste pollution. The material was characterized with FTIR and SEM instruments. The results of the FTIR analysis showed the modified bentonite undergo wavenumber shift at 3380 cm-1 to 3396 cm-1 which has sharper band shape, and the bentonite that has been applied to the waste has increased in intensity at wavenumber 600 cm-1 to 500 cm-1. The characterization with SEM displayed the surface of the bentonite became homogeneous. The coagulation process of POME waste was carried out using contact time and coagulant mass variations to determine the optimum conditions of the coagulant, furthermore with analysis of free fatty acid (FFA) levels, total suspended solid (TSS) levels and modified bentonite regeneration. The optimum condition of the coagulation agent was determined, which the optimum contact time was known at 45 minutes of stirring and the optimum mass was 0,4 grams of modified bentonite dose per 10 mL of POME waste or at 40 g/L concentration. FFA and TSS analysis showed the decrease in FFA levels of POME waste which previously 46 ppm were decreased by 49,7% to 23,1 ppm and TSS levels were decreased by 73,7% from 238 mg/L to 62,5 mg/L and has fulfill the quality standard of palm oil industry waste. The results of the modified bentonite regeneration also showed it’s stable ability as the material can still reduce the turbidity value of POME along with the repetition of the regeneration cycle waste although it’s efficiency weaken each repetition.
