PEMANFAATAN BENTONIT TERMODIFIKASI SEBAGAI AGEN KOAGULASI PENGOLAHAN AIR LIMBAH INDUSTRI TAHU
Modification of Baturaja natural bentonite (Ca-bentonite) was carried out by cation exchange method into Na-bentonite and H2-bentonite. The formation of Na-bentonite is done by adding saturated NaCl to Ca-bentonite which aims to activate Na+ and replace Ca2+ ions. The formation of H2-bentonite was carried out by adding a saturated solution of NH4Cl in Na-bentonite. Characterization using FTIR showed a shift at the peak of 1013 cm-1 to 1015 cm-1 in modified bentonite that had been applied to tofu waste, indicating the occurrence of Si-O-Si stretching vibrations. Characterization using XRD showed that the mineral composition of modified bentonite was still the same as that of modified bentonite that had been applied to tofu waste, but the crystal size increased. Characterization using SEM showed that the surface state of bentonite after modification was smoother than before modification. Baturaja natural bentonite (Ca-bentonite) experienced a surface expansion of 171 m2/g to 174 m2/g after being modified to Na-bentonite and changed to 181 m2/g after being modified to H2-bentonite. Modified bentonite is used as a coagulation agent for tofu factory wastewater. The use of modified bentonite as a coagulation agent for tofu waste is effective in reducing COD and TSS levels according to the requirements of the Wastewater Quality Standard for Business and/or Soybean Processing Activities Number 5 of 2014. The optimum dose of using H2-bentonite in reducing the turbidity value of 100 mL of tofu waste is 1 gram with the effectiveness of the reduction is 98.4%. H2-bentonite works optimally at neutral pH or 7.
