KEBIJAKAN LUAR NEGERI AMERIKA SERIKAT DALAM MEMPERKUATTREATY ON THE NON-PROLIFERATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS (NPT) PADA TAHUN 2017 – 2020
In order to strengthen the NPT of the United States during the administration of President Barack Hussein Obama, precisely in 2009 to 2016 it tended to have a positive foreign policy where the foreign policy issued emphasized more on soft power or diplomacy such as bilateral and multilateral cooperation, which was then considered less effective due to from the impact of a fatal Iranian missile attack. Meanwhile, in the next period, namely 2017 to 2020, when the United States was under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, the United States' foreign policy in strengthening the NPT generally did the opposite of what Obama did. It is more inclined to a negative foreign policy where the majority of foreign policy is in the form of withdrawal from treaties, criticism and condemnation, thus causing a decrease in United States credibility in implementing threats and sanctions, causing doubts and questions in the view of the international community. The purpose of this study is to find out how the United States' foreign policy strengthens the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in 2017 to 2020. In this study, the researcher analyzes using the concept of foreign policy proposed by K.J Holsti, where the dimensions of the research are described based on the nature of foreign policy, namely Foreign Policy Orientation, Role, Goal, and Actions. The method used is descriptive-qualitative which is to explain various things related to the problems in the research. So, it can be seen that US foreign policy in strengthening the NPT in 2017-2020 focuses on complying with the agreement and reducing US commitments in matters that are considered harmful to its national interests, namely the spread of weapons of mass destruction
