Methylene blue can cause environmental pollution if discharged without proper treatment. Many textile industries dispose of methylene blue dye waste with concentrations above the threshold freely into the aquatic environment which causes disturbed aquatic ecosystems. One of the methods to treat methylene blue dye waste is the adsorption method. Research on the synthesis of reduced graphene oxide from microcrystalline cellulose and its application on the adsorption of methylene blue dye has been carried out. The synthesized materials i.e graphite, graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide were characterized by XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. Quantitative analysis of methylene blue removal was carried out with UV-vis spectrophotometer. The adsorption process was evaluated to determine the effect of concentration, adsorption time and adsorbent weight. The XRD pattern shows the formation of peak at 2θ 24°-26o for graphite, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide. Characterization by FTIR shows the appearance of O-H bending at 3358 cm-1 for graphene oxide and 3342 cm-1 for reduced graphene oxide. Raman characterization results show that reduced graphene oxide has a wavelength at D-band peak at 1375 cm-1 and at G-band peak it reaches 1597 cm-1 with ID/IG intensity ratio 0.8. Methylene blue adsorption test results shows that reduced graphene oxide has the best adsorption capacity with adsorbent weight at 25 mg, concentration at 30 ppm and optimum time at 45 minutes and the highest adsorption capacity value at 86.9%. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm rule as confirmed by R2 value of 0.9998. The results of this study shows that the reduced graphene oxide material is able to adsorb methylene blue the best compared to graphite and graphene oxide which have low adsorption capacity in absorbing methylene blue dye.
