The title of this scientific work is Detik.com News Portal Reader Motives in seeking study information for Communication Science students, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Sriwijaya University, Bukit Campus in seeking information. Detik.com News Portal is a web portal that contains online news and articles on Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to determine the motives of students in seeking information on the detik.com news portal. This study uses a qualitative method with Mc Quail analysis, a theory that has four elements of reader motives, namely: information, personal identity, integration and social interaction, entertainment. From the results of research using McQuail theory, it is found that in general the motives of readers of the detik.com news portal are in accordance with the theory of motives for using media from McQuail, but there are also some points that are not included in the motives of readers using the detik.com news portal. The results of the research from the information element show that the average informant is quite satisfied with the detik.com news portal which they consider to be able to meet their information needs and their reference needs. Then from the elements according to some informants reading detik.com news can increase the confidence of the readers even though the informants also think that reading the news does not have an effect on the formation of self-motivation of the readers. then from the elements of integration and social interaction, the informants argue that reading news and updates on news developments will really help readers to find topics of conversation in their environment. Then from the entertainment element, readers read news on the detik.com news portal because readers feel they can fill their spare time by reading the news on the detik.com news portal.
