Visual impairment and blindness is still a Health problem. Most of blindness are caused by cataracts. The prevalence and causes of cataract in each place is different and not all places have data the prevalence of cataracts. Therefore, this study was made to determine the prevalence, risk factors, and of cataracts in District Ilir Timur I, Palembang. This research is analytical survey which uses cross-sectional as the method The research was conducted in July - December 2012 and uses primary data including people aged > 40 years old. There are 75 respondents who have fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criterias after undergoing anamnesis and physical examination. Diagnosis is made by turbidity, visual acuity, presence or absence of symptoms, and respondents who had been diagnosed cataract by a doctor. Data processed by SPSS with chi-square and t-test method. The result showed 50,7% positives and 37 49,3% negatives cataract. In statistical tests, it is known there is a significant association between the incidence of cataracts with age (p = 0,011 OR = 3,764 Cl 95% = 1,325 - 10,697). However, the statistical test also found no strong relationship between the incidence of cataracts with gender (p = 0,084), family history of cataract (p = 0,526), alcohol consumption (p = 0,444) , glaucoma (p = 0,321), eye infections (p = 0,317), eye trauma (p = 0,664), myopia (p = 0,526), hypertension (p = 0,298), diabetes mellitus (p = 0,591), long-term drug use (p = 0,479), smoking (p = 0,484), body mass index (p = 0,555), and exposure to ultraviolet light (p = 0,191). Aging has a significant relationship with the incidence of cataracts and any indicate gender has influence with the incidence of cataracts.
