Background: South Sumatera is the third province in Indonesia with the largest thalassemic patients. Hematologic parameter, especially hemoglobin, is an important parameter to be chccked before transfusion process either for diagnosis or management. Objective: To identijy pre-transfusion hematologic characteristics of p major thalassemic patients which were treated in the ward of Pediatrics at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital. Method: Descriptive Cross Sectional Design. The sample of this study were P major thalassemic patients who had undergone pre-transfusion hematological test within the period of lst January 2012-3151 December 2012. Results: There were 73 patients that treated at Pediatric Departement. There were 28 patients (38.3%) aged 6 - 10 years which were the largest group. 37 patients (50.7%) were females.The mean of hemoglobin was 6.23 ± 1.54 g/dL. The range ofhematocrit was 7.5 - 29.7% with 20% as the median value. The mean of RBC count was 2.59 ± 0.58 x l(f /mm3. The range of MCV value was 58-93 fL with 76 fL as the median value. The range of MCH value was 16-29 pg with 24 pg as the median value. The range of MCHC value was 23-42.7 g/dL with 32 g/dL as the median value. The RDW value was not analyzed because oflack of data. Conclusion: All results from the pre-transfusion hematological test were found lower than normal value.
