The forest and land fires disaster in Indonesia are a serious problem and must be faced by the Indonesian people during the dry season almost every year. In 2019 the forest and land fires in the Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir Regency, was more than 51 hectares of forest and land burned and had 20 hotspots. The purpose of this study was to analyze public perceptions of forest and wetland fires in Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra Province. This study uses a qualitative and descriptive method using a purposive sampling technique with 16 informants, which is 4 expert informants and 12 key informants. The results showed that the majority of the community knew that land fires that occurred in Tanjung Seteko Village and Sejaro Sakti Village occurred on unproductive land and were often caused by cigarette butts. The community already knows the sanctions and impacts that will be received and has implemented the applicable prohibitions. Therefore, community do not burn land when they want to clear land but use the slash and burn method with a tractor engine and spray poison and if a land fire occurs in the surrounding area, the most felt impact is burning smoke and the community is afraid that the fire will spread to productive land so that some people will guard the land and leave it more to the authorities to extinguish the fire. In tackling the incidence of fires on abandoned land, the government should give warnings to owners of idle land so that they can manage it into productive land and local people officials should form community groups that care about fire for prevention, handling and overcoming of land fires.
