Background: Valvular heart disease is still remain a public Health problem in developing counlries and predominantly affects young adults. Left undiagnosed and untreated can cause progressive deterioration in heart function. The prevalence of valvular heart disease in Indonesia is not well defined, therefore this study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of valvular heart disease in RSUP dr. Mohamad Hoesin Palembang. Methods: This is an observational descriptive study with cross sectional approach, 38 subjects were chosen via consecutive sampling methode in 2011 and 2012. Sex, age, type of valve lesion, main symptom, and signs were collected from medical record. Data analysis was carried out by SPSS version 21 Software. Results: This study show that the prevalence of valvular heart disease in RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang for the priode of2011-2012 is 0,106%. Total case in 2011 was 10 cases (26,3%), while in 2012 was 28 cases (73,7%). Valvular heart disease affects women more often than men and predominantly affect adults. The main etiology of valvular heart disease in this study was rheumatic heart disease. The most symptom of valvular heart disease was dyspnea and the major sign was murmur. Conclusion: Prevalence of valvular heart disease in RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang is still high.
