IMPLICATURES IN FLIPPED ENGLISH MOVIE.

Implicature is the study of hidden meaning through human communication. This research discussed conversational implicature in Flipped English movie. The aims of this study were (1) to find out the implicatures in Flipped English movie, (2) to find out the maxims flouting in the implicatures, (3) to find out the intended meanings of the implicatures and (4) to find out the dissemination of implicatures at SMAN 2 Palembang. This study utilized descriptive qualitative research. In collecting the data, the research used Flipped English movie script as the data source. In addition, the researcher used documentation as the instrument to find out the data. The data were classified into conversational implicatures and flouting maxims based on Grice's theory (1975). The findings showed that 25 data of implicatures from 775 utterances made by the characters were found. The most dominant type of conversational implicature was generalized conversational implicature with 16 data of implicatures (64%), and particularized conversational implicature was the second most dominant with 9 data of implicatures (36%). For the flouting maxims, (36%) or 9 instances of flouting the maxim of quality, (32%) or 8 instances of flouting the maxim of relevance, (24%) or 6 instances of flouting the maxim of quantity, and (8%) or 2 instances of flouting the maxim of manner. The dissemination of implicatures at SMA Negeri 2 Palembang showed that most twelfth-grade students were familiar with the implicatures through daily conversation and Flipped English movie. Therefore, it was more precise for the students to interpret the intended meaning of the conversations, but classifying some types of conversational implicatures that create flouting maxims took much work since the language limitation became a challenge and barrier for them.
