Background: Postpartum hemorrhage is the main cause of maternal mortality. 50-60%, uterine atony caused of postpartum hemorrhage, In Indonesia, maternal mortality rate (MMR) in 2007 amounted to 228 of100.000 births (SDK1, 2007). In South Sumatera province, maternal mortality rate (MMR) increasedfrom 79,31 of 100.000 births (124 death) in 2008 to 150,93 of 100.000 births (143 death) in 2009. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics and to know prevalence of postpartum hemorrhage patients cause uterine atony in Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital during 1 August 2006-31 August 2011. Method: The study was done is observational descriptive study with case series design which has been held from October, 2011 until December, 2011. Result: There were 52 cases of postpartum hemorrhage cause uterine atony from 341 cases of postpartum hemorrhage in Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang during 1 August 2006-31 August 2011. The characteristics of postpartum hemorrhage patients cause uterine atony consist of; based of age classification, in low risk age category between 20-35 years were 32 cases (61,5%); patients with multigravid and multiparity more dominant were 37 and 35 cases (71,1% and 67,3%); most of the patients had a moderate anemia were 25 cases (48,1%); majority of postpartum hemorrhage patients cause uterine atony had history of recent labor outside the hospital (45 cases, 86,5%) with first helper is midwifes (43 cases, 82,7%). Conclusion: The majority characteristics of postpartum hemorrhage patients cause uterine atony consist of age, multiparity, multigravid, anemia, course of labor, recent labor outside the hospital and have midwifes as their birth attendant. Therefore, a further study about the relationship of those factors and the incidence of postpartum hemorrhage patients cause uterine atony.
