Introduction: Typhoid fever is still being one of the global medicalyproblem. However, clinicians findany cases of antibiotic-sensitiye resistanceto Salmonella typhi which is the etiology of typhoid fever. In addition, today's emerging tendency for people in selecting herbs to overcome various diseases. The use of seeds of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) as an alternative medicine in some gastrointestinal diseases and research into the antibacterial compounds contained in it, raises questions about the antibacterial effect against Salmonella typhi. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is difference in effectiveness between the seeds of cucumbers and chloramphenicol as a Standard antibiotic in inhibiting the growth of Salmonella typhi. Methods: This study uses a method of Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion. Cucumber seed extract obtained by maceration and made in various concentration gradient of 5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, and 80% with Dimethyl Sulfaoxyde solvent (DMSO). Result: The results were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Witney proceed to the zone of bacterial growth inhibition by extracts of cucumber seeds. The results indicate that there is a difference between group concentration and there is a relationship between the magnitude of the concentration of the extract and the size of inhibitory zones are formed, the greater the concentration of the extract, the greater the inhibition zone formed. While the linear regression test for the equality test is obtained the equation Y = 5.823X + 7601 or in other words 10% methanol extract equivalent to 12:08 mg/ml chloramphenicol, so Ho is rejected. Discussion: Cucumber seed extract has inhibitory power on the growth of Salmonella typhi. However, much weaker compared with chloramphenicol. So, there are differences in effectiveness between cucumber seed extract and chloramphenicol in inhibiting the growth of Salmonella typhi.
