Background: Thalassemia is a hereditary disease that in general there is a deceleration in hemoglobin synthesis. Thalassemia patients need to receive blood transfusion regularly to blood hemoglobin. mcrease However, patients will need various blood amount in each individual. Objectives: This aim of this study is to determine the need for blood transfusion based on clinical characteristics of patients with thalassemia in Department of Pediatrics of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. Method: This descriptive study used secondary data fforn medical records of thalassemia patients in Department of Pediatrics of Moh. Hoesin Palembang General Hospital from Desember 2012 until November 2013 and transfusion data that recorded and kept by POPTI Palembang. There was 82 patients who had been receiving blood transfusion regularly for 1 year or more as of December 2013 in Moh. Hoesin Palembang General Hospital. Nine patients were excluded due to their age which was more than 18 years old, so that 73 people was obtained as this study samples. Results: This study shows that from 73 samples, most of its transfusion frequency was in the range of 12-14 times a year with an average of 10,44�}3,325 times per year. Most patients undergo blood transfusion every 20-43 days. The average volume of blood transfusion was 3328,08 �}1329,6 ml or approximately 22 bags of PRC per year and 329,57�}103,6 ml or about 2 bags of PRC every transfusion. Most of natient’s transfusion needs was in the range 150-199 ml/kg/year. Conclusion: Most of thalassemia patients in Department of Pediatrics of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin vjenerai hospital Palembang eome to gei blood transfusion every montlis about 2 bags of PRC every transfusion or approximately 22 bags of PRC per year. Blood donation program is highly suggested to be established to help thalassemia patients to fulfill needs of transfusion.
