PREVALENSI KATARAK SENILIS DAN FAKTOR RISIKO STATUS EKONOMI DAN MEROKOK DI KECAMATAN SEBERANG ULU II PALEMBANG
Background: According to World Health Organization (WHO), cataract is the main cause of visual impairment and blindness for more than 17 million people in the world. Senile cataract is the most common type of cataract that happens to occur. There are many risk factor of cataract, such as economic status and smoking habit. Cataract can be prevented, delayed and slowed by avoiding the cause and the risk of the disease. Objective: To determine the prevalence of senile catarcact and the correlation between it and its, i. e. factor s economic status and smoking habit in Kecamatan Seberang Ulu II Palembang. Purpose: This study used descriptive analytic method with cross-sectional approchment, which held in October to Desemeber 2012 in Kecamatan Seberang Ulu II, Palembang, South Sumatera. The sampling method was conducted by the proportionate multistage random sampling which the population was those who were >40 years old in age. The sample assigned in this study were 113 samples in total. The data was obtained by interview, guestionnaire, and direct eye examination. Result: The prevalence of senile cataract was 33%. This study showed that there was a correlation between senile cataract and low economic status (p=0,038) while there was no correlation between senile cataract and smoking habit (p = 0,218). Conclusion: The prevalence of senile cataract in Kecamatan Seberang Ulu II in high rate. This study showed a correlation between senile cataract and low economic status while there was no correlation between senile cataract and smoking habit.
