Background : Low Birth Weight (LBW) is one of the highest causes of death in infants. Number of deaths caused by LBW 40 times higher compared with infants who had a birth weight more than 2500 grams. Factors that influence the incidence of low birth weight are maternal age, gestation, parity, preeclampsiaa dan gemeli. Objective : This study aimed to determine the prevalence of LBW and frequency distribution of risk factors on the incidence of LBW in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital period 1 January to 31 December 2012. Methods : the study was a survey conducted descriptive cross sectional approach. Data taken a secondary data obtained from the medical records department of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital in 2012. Samples totalling 296 patients who met the inclusion criteria. The variables of this study were maternal age, gestation, parity, preeclampsia and gemeli. Results : The prevalence of LBW in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital period 1 January to 31 December 2012 is 8,74%. Maternal age group 25-35 years as many as 217 cases (73,3%), preterm gestation group as many as 187 cases (63,2%), parity primiparous group as many as 144 cases (48,6%), preeclampsia group as many as 64 cases (21,6%) and gemeli group as many as 25 cases (8,4%). Conclusion : The incidence of LBW in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital is not much different from other places in Indonesia. The prevalence of LBW is high enough can be lowered to be aware of these risk factors.
