Introduction: Hypertension is a degenerative disease that have a high rate of morbidity and mortality, a condition where the blood pressure exceeds normal blood pressure. Hypertension in the elderly is largely isolated systolic hypertension.hypertension. This study aimed to determine characteristic hypertension in the elderly patients at Kelurahan 32 Ilir Kecamatan Ilir Barat II Palembang 2013. Method: The type of research was a descriptive analytic observational studies using cross sectional. The population is all residents of Kelurahan 32 Ilir Kecamatan Ilir Barat II aged >60 years. The number of samples was 385 people with accidental sampling. The data of this study was obtained by primary data which were obtained by direct measurement and structured interviews with questionnaires. Results: The results of this study is 65,7% with hypertension. From the previous research which was done in 2004, the result was higher at Kelurahan 32 Ilir with 57,7%. The highest group that suffered from hypertension was 71-75 years. The result for patients who suffers from isolated systolic hypertension was 35,8%. Most clinical symptoms was headache (31,8%). Based on the results of Chi square test there was a significant relationship between age (p=0,000) and employment (p=0,000) to the incidence of hypertension. Conclusion: Hence, there was an increased in incidence of hypertension with age and employment being the factors that influence the incidence of hypertension at 32 Ilir Kecamatan Ilir Barat II Palembang 2013.
