Introduction: Drowning is a condition where whole or half part of body submerged into fluid. Approximately 0.7% of aJJ deaths worldwide or more than 500,000 deaths each year are caused by drowning. Indonesia is a countiy that is surrounded by two oceans with alot of rivers and lakes. Because of that, there is a lot of drowning cases found. In developing countries prevalence of drowning are unrecorded. The purpose of this research is to determine the prevalence of drowning in Forensic and Medicolegal Department of RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Period 2008-2012. Method: This study was a descriptive observational study using cross-sectional approach. The research data was collected ffom visum et repertum in Forensic and Medicolegal Department of RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from Januaiy 2008 until December2012. Population of this research was all cases that was recorded at forensic department and sample obtained was all drowning victims from 2008 until 2012 which were 99 people. Result: Prevalence of drowning cases from 2008 until 2012 in sequence are 6,93%, 10,04%, 10,7%, 13,53%, and 12,58%. Conclusion: The most frequent cases of drowning were found w'ith group of ages 26 to 35 years old with a percentage of 27.27% with cases in voiving boys more with 83,83%. The most frequent cases were found at the river with the prevalence of 61,61 % cases.
