Background: Heart failure has become a worldwide health problem, at the same time, a significant cause of hospitalization with high cost. The prognosis of heart failure will be worse if the causes aren ’t treated. Objective: To identify the characteristics of patients with congestive heart failure in Inpatient Installation at Internal Medicine Department of RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang period January 2010 - December 2010. Method: This research was a descriptive observational research with cross sectional design. Population in this research were 329 patients and sample in this research were 220 patients. Results: From 220 patients, the highest age range of congestive heart failure patients was 65-69 years old (17,3%). 58,6% of congestive heart failure patients was male. Shortness of breath was the most common complaint from congestive heart failure patients (87,7%). Hypertension heart disease was the main underlying disease of congestive heart failure (46,8%). Based on the results of physical examination that include blood pressure, pulse rate, repiration rate, pretibial edema, gallop S3, only blood pressure that was abnormal (56%). From 98 patients who underwent the echocardiography examination, finding of ejection fraction < 60% was the most common found (57,1%). Based on the type of given drugs, diuretic was the most widely given therapy in patients with congestive heart failure (85,5%). Conclusion: Patients were mostly male with the age rangingfrom 65 to 69 years old. Shortness of breath was the most common complaint obtained (87,7%). Hypertension heart disease was the mostly underlying disease of congestive heart failure (46,8%). Most of the patients who underwent the echocardiography examination had results that show decrease of heart pumpfunction (57,1%).
