The swamp land development, especially tidal lowland, has good prospect. Some constraints for tidal lowland development such as the existence of phyrite content and slow decompostion of organic matter due to flooding can restrict the land productivity. The availability of data and information conceming the existence of phyrite content and organic matter is important to prevent improper land development. The research objective was to produce the characterization and mapping of phyrite content and organic matter in tidal lowland. It was conducted in June 2010 at Primary Channel 17-5S, Mulya Sari Village, Tanjung Lago Subdistrict, Banyuasin District. Soil analysis was carried out at Soil Laboratory, Soil Science Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The method used in this study was detail survey with scale of 1:20,000 and 2 points observation density for each 16 ha covering total area of 256 ha. The results showed that soil in this study area is classified as mineral soil with top soil, having brown-gray color (10 YR 4/1-10 YR 2/2) and subsoil horizon tend to have gray color (10 YR 5/1-10 YR 6/2). Soil textures are loam, clayey loam and clay, repsectively. Phyrite is distributed at the depth of-50 cm to - 120 cm ffom soil surface with phyrite content in the range of low with magnitude 0.01% to 0.11% and medium with magnitude 0.20% to 2.36%. The organic matter content at study area is classified as medium (2.171% to 2.91%), high (4.60 %) and very high (5,45 % to 13.26 %), respectively
