Introduction: Every deviation of ocular alignment is called strabismus. Strabismus or ocular misalignment occurs in approximately 4% of world population. In Indonesia, studies about the prevalence and proportion of strabismus based on its classification are less and limited. So, the purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence and the proportion of strabismus in Eye Polyclinic of Moehammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang in August 2006 - July 2011. Methods: This study is a retrospective observational descriptive study with cross sectional design and supported by collecting the medical records ffom 31 October 2011 -23 December 2011. Result: During the five years period ffom August 2006 to July 2011, there were 71 cases of strabismus in Eye Policlinic of Moehammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. The prevalences of strabismus for those five years were 0.17%, 0.14%, 0.31%, 0.22% and 0.43%. The mean prevalence of strabismus over the five years was 0.25%. While, the largest proportion of strabismus based on the classification were: congenital strabismus, tropia strabismus, comitant strabismus, monocular strabismus and exodeviation strabismus respectively. Conclusion: The prevalence of strabismus in the Eye Policlinic of Moehammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang was lower than world prevalance but it was significant with the prevalence of strabismus in other regions in Indonesia. Almost all of the largest proportion of strabismus in the Eye Policlinic Moehammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang were appropriate with several previous studies in other study centre. However, fiirther research needs to be done to ensure the relationship between the proportion and the cause of strabismus.
