Mulan is a 2020 American action drama film directed by Niki Caro tells us about the struggle of a woman who against gender discrimination by disguised herself to replace her father on the battlefield. This study uses Stuart Hall's Reception Analysis theory with an encoding-decoding approach, which focuses on the meeting between the media and the audience. The discussion in this study includes the process of making meaning by the filmmakers of Mulan (2020) using semiotic analysis and the process of interpreting the message by the audience using reception analysis. The analysis process is based on three factors that influence the meaning, namely frameworks of knowledge, relations of production and technical infrastructure. This type of research is descriptive qualitative, so that observation and in-depth interviews become the main focus in data collection. This study was conducted to determine the position of the audience's meaning which includes the dominant hegemonic position, the negotiation position and the opposition position. The results of this study show that the more similarities in terms of background knowledge, socio-cultural experience and the relations between the decoder and encoder, the more likely the audience is to be in a dominant hegemonic position. This means that the audience agrees with all the messages found in the preferred reading in the Mulan (2020) film. Meanwhile, audience who lack or even have nothing in common will tend to be in a position of negotiation or opposition.
