This study aims to determine and describe the level of mastery of basic mathematics materials for new students (Maba) of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science (FMIPA) and the Faculty of Agriculture (FP) Sriwijaya University for the 2020/2021 academic year. Data were collected using a questionnaire in the form of 40 essay questions on basic mathematics. The research sample consisted of 88 Maba from FMIPA and 91 Maba from FP using stratified random sampling. Data analysis was done descriptively. The results showed that the largest average value in FMIPA was obtained by the mathematics department which was 33,7857 while in FP it was obtained by the department of fishery technology which was 31,5. Then overall, both from FMIPA and FP, the level of mastery of the basic material of mathematics for new students is only in the range of 0% - 52%. The order of numbers is the most widely mastered basic material because 52.27% of new students can answer 100% of the questions correctly. The lowest mastery is on the rank and root material, which is only 73% who master 50% of the material and only 2.27% who fully master it. As much as 50% of the material on intege r and decimal operations, fraction operations, and linear equations with one variable is mastered by more than 85% of Maba in Mathematics and Natural Sciences. However, 100% of the correct answers were only 0%, 27%, and 41% for the three materials, respectively. Only 59.34% and 45.05% of FP Maba mastered 50% of fraction operations, and powers and roots. Less than 40% of FP Maba can answer all the questions correctly for each material, and no one even answers 100% correctly on integer operations, and in terms of powers and roots
