REABILITY ANALYSIS OF READING TEXTS IN ENGLISH TEXTBOOK WHEN ENGLISH RINGS A BELL FOR SEVENTH GRADERS
Readability is a measure of how well and how simply the readers achieve the meaning from a text. Educators have used the term readability to describe all the text features that influence how people read and understand a book. The purpose of this study were to find out the readability of the texts and find out whether the readability of English reading texts match with the reading level of the students, and also to select the vocabulary that should be learned more from reading texts. This study applied content analysis data in the form of reading texts containing in English textbooks for Junior High School students. In this study, the data were reading texts selected from an English textbook entitled “When English Rings a Bell” published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. The result revealed that the readability score was 87.48, 80.57, 77.07, 52.46, 65.19, 73.21 which is appropriate with seventh grade students in general, but it does not match with students reading level of the seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 42 Palembang.
