PENGARUH TEMPERATUR PADA PROSES PACK CARBURIZING TERHADAP KEKERASAN BAJA AISI 1045 DENGAN MEDIA ARANG KAYU GELAM
Pack carburizing is the process of adding carbon elements to the surface of steel using solid media or wood charcoal. This research is using experimental method. The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the mechanical properties of the AISI 1045 steel before and after the pack carburizing process and to determine the effect of the pack carburizing process with temperature variations on the hardness of AISI 1045steel. The independent variables used were pack carburizing variations of 750oC, 850oC, and 950oC with 60 minutes of holding time. Hardness testing of pack carburizing results is using the Vickers method. The results in the study showed that the steel without the pack carburizing process had a hardness value 113.979 kgf/mm2 meanwhile the carburizing steel pack with a temperature variation of 750oC had a hardness value 113.071 kgf/mm2 the hardness value decreased compared to steel without the carburizing process. Variation at temperature of 850oC and hardness value 114.752 kgf/mm2 which increased compared to steel temperature of 750oC. Meanwhile the carburizing steel pack with a temperature variation of 950oC produces a hardness value of 144.813 kgf/mm2 which has a high increase. The conclusion of the study shows the effect of temperature on the pack carburizing process on the hardness of AISI 1045 with gelam wood charcoal as a medium at temperature above 850oC the value of steel hardness increases.
