Papaya (Carica papaya L.) can be used as an altemative to treat diarrheal disease caused by infection with bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. This study aims to know the potential of fractions and compounds of papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.) as an antibacterial to Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. The study was conducted in the Laboratory of Genetics and Biotechnology Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Sriwijaya, Indralaya, from February to October 2014. The experimental research method using a completely randomized design with 6 treatments and 4 replications, the treatment used were the most active fraction with various concemtration of the active fraction with various concentrations (4000, 2000, 1000, 500, 250, and 125) ug/ml. Extraction was done by maceration method, fractionation was conducted using liquid-liquid ffactionation (FCC), and activity assay test using the agar diffusion method. The test used were Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. Data were analyzed with Standard deviation (Sd) and Analysis of Variants (ANOVA) and advanced test using SPSS version 16. The results obtained methanol-water active fraction to bacterial water testing whereas the fraction of ethyl acetate and n-hexane fraction were inactivity. MIC values on methanol-water fraction to Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi was 250 pg/ml. Water methanol fraction containing antibacterial flavonoid compounds. MIC values of compounds active to Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi was 125 pg / ml. From this study it can be concluded that the methanol-water fraction of water from the leaves of papaya (Carica papaya L.) has antibacterial activity to Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi.
