The preparation of molybdenum phosphide pillared bentonite catalyst has been carried out with various variations of bentonite-MoP concentrations, namely 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 meq/g. The purpose of this study was to apply the bentonite-MoP catalyst during the dehydration of isopropyl alcohol to diisopropyl ether and to characterize the best synthesis results using XRD, SEM-EDS, FTIR and GSA. Pilarization was carried out to increase the catalytic ability of bentonite using molybdenum phosphide. Before being polarized, bentonite was prepared using NaCl to obtain Na-bentonite. Determination of CEC (Cation Exchange Capasity) in natural bentonite and Na-Bentonite has increased from natural bentonite by 165,85mEq/100 grams and Na-Bentonite at 279,15 mEq/100 grams, so that it will facilitate the pilarization process. Based on XRD characterization pilarization has been successfully carried out, indicated by a 2θ shift from an angle of 6,02° to 7,22°. The SEM-EDS results showed changes in morphology and elements, Na-Bentonite which originally had a layered surface structure while the surface pores of bentonite-MoP had many gaps because part of the surface was covered by molybdenum and phosphide, indicated by the presence of small oval spots. Pilarization was successfully carried out as indicated by the increase of the Mo element from 0% to 5,03% and the P element from 0,24% to 0,80%. The FTIR spectra on bentonite-MoP were characterized by the appearance of an absorption band of 925 cm-1 which was MoO2 vibrations. The results of the GSA analysis showed an increase in the pore surface area, initially from 52,844 m2/g to 63,69 m2/g. The pore diameter was originally 53,76Å to 63,93 Å. The acidity analysis was carried out using gravimetric method by calculating the amount of ammonia absorbed, the results of the acidity analysis showed an increase in the total acidity after the initial screening was carried out from 1,5755 mmol/g to 5,7732 mmol/g. The performance of the bentonite-MoP catalyst was showed in converting isopropyl alcohol to diisopropyl ether and the conversion yield was measured using GC-MS. The diisopropyl ether product formed was 64.5% when converted with 4 mEq/g bentonite-MoP catalyst.
