ABSTRACT:The problem of groundwater in Banyuasin Regency, Kenten Laut sub-district, the residential area has a surface water quality with an iron (Fe) content of 3,324 mg/L. The reduction in iron content can be done by the adsorption method, namely by using an adsorbent. Banana peels contain pectin and cellulose which have the potential to be used as raw materials for heavy metal adsorbents. The lack of utilization of banana peel waste needs to be investigated to see its ability to absorb iron (Fe). The aim of the study was to determine the optimum contact time and mass of banana peel biochar and to determine the effectiveness and capacity of Fe adsorbed in well water. The research was carried out from January to April 2021, at the Biotechnology Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya and UPTD Environmental Laboratory, South Sumatra Province Environmental Service. The research material used was banana lilin peel (Musa zebrina Van Hautte). The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 repetitions. Data analysis using one way ANOVA then continued with Duncan test at 5% error . Analysis of Fe metal using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The results showed that the optimum adsorption of banana lilin peel biochar was at 30 minutes with an efficiency of 97.59%. While the optimum mass required for removal of Fe metal is 0.722 g. The contact time and mass of biochar have an effect on the removal of Fe metal so that it can be applied to well water. Biochar has the potential to absorb Fe metal in well water into clean water according to the standards of the Minister of Health Regulation, which is 5 minutes and a mass of 0.722 g. The adsorption process on the effect of contact time should be done by increasing the time range to see the adsorption saturation point of the banana lilin peel biochar (Musa zebrina Van Hautte) and need for development using a kontinyu method.
