One of the causes of damage to the aquatic environment is pollution due to the entry of pollutants into the aquatic environment. One of the pollutants that causes water pollution is heavy metals. Chromium and Nickel are heavy metals that are often associated with the problem of pollution of the aquatic environment due to their toxicity. Microalgae that have the potential as biosorbents for heavy metals to overcome waste pollution in waters because of their abundant availability in waters, fast reproduction, wide range of microalgae toxicity, a lot of waste that can be remedied, does not produce toxic effluents, and is non-pathogenic. The microalgae species of wetland waters that have the potential to be developed are Spirulina sp. Heavy metal sorption by Spirulina sp. in each heavy metal has a different sorption power which is the basis of the importance of seeing the potential of Spirulina sp. as an adsorbent for heavy metals Cr and Ni. This research was conducted to determine the effect of various concentrations of heavy metals Cr and Ni on the growth of Spirulina sp. and the ability of Spirulina sp. in absorbing various concentrations of heavy metals Cr and Ni. The research was carried out from January 2021 to March 2021 at the Laboratory of the Biology Education Study Program, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sriwijaya University Palembang, the Integrated Research Laboratory for the Postgraduate Program of Sriwijaya University, and the UPTD Environmental Laboratory of the Environment and Land Service of South Sumatra Province. The results showed that the administration of different concentrations of heavy metals Cr and Ni affected the growth of Spirulina sp. The higher the concentration of heavy metals Cr and Ni caused a decrease in the growth of Spirulina sp. The ability of Spirulina sp. in decrease heavy metals concentration Cr 1 mg/L, 3 mg/L, 5 mg/L, 7 mg/L respectively 79%, 45.33%, 24.8%, 9.71% and decrease heavy metals concentration Ni 1 mg/L, Ni 3 mg/L, Ni 5 mg/L, Ni 7 mg/L 65%, 36.66%, 25.8%, and 13.28%.
