KONVERSI FRUKTOSA MENJADI 5-HIDROKSIMETILFURFURAL DAN ASAM LEVULINAT DENGAN KATALIS ASAM SULFAT DAN BENTONIT
Conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and levulinic acid using sulphuric acid and bentonite as catalysts in water medium at various temperature has been carried out. Product of conversion was monitored using thin layer chromatography (TLC) and analized quantitatively using GC and GC-MS. Conversion of fructose to 5-hidroxymethylfurfural using sulphuric acid as a catalyst gave 5-hidroxymethylfurfural with a concentration 0.317-0.339 (% v/v) and conversion of 5-hidroxymethylfurfural to levulinic acid using sulphuric acid as a catalyst gave levulinic acid with a concentration 0.479-2.277 % v/v) at a reaction time 1-15 hours and temperature 90°C. Conversion using bentonite as a catalyst did not gave neither 5-hidroxymethylfurfural nor levulinic acid. Reaction at temperature 80°C and 100°C using sulphuric acid and bentonite did not produced 5-hidroxymethylfurfuraI and levulinic acid as main products, but several by-products were obtained such as 2-furancarboxaldehyde for conversion of fructose and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid-methyl ester, tetrahydro-4H-pyran-4-ol, ohydroxyacetanilide and mannitol for conversion of 5- hidroxymethylfurfural.
